Where to See Sea Turtles on Maui: The Best Spots to Find Honu
There's something pretty special about spotting a sea turtle while snorkeling on Maui. Whether you catch one gliding through the water, resting beneath a rocky ledge, or popping its head above the surface for a breath of air, it's an experience that never really gets old.
Known as honu in Hawaiian, green sea turtles are some of Maui's most recognizable marine residents. And luckily for visitors, there are plenty of places around the island where you might encounter them in their natural habitat.
Meet Maui's Honu: Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles
Before we get into where to find them, let's get to know these incredible creatures a little better.
Hawaiian green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) are found throughout the Hawaiian Islands and are a familiar sight along Maui's coastline. Despite their name, their shells aren't necessarily green. The name actually comes from the greenish color of their body fat, which is influenced by their plant-based diet.
Adult honu primarily feed on algae and seagrass, which is one reason they're frequently spotted around Maui's rocky reefs.
You might also notice a turtle resting on the ocean floor or swimming toward the surface. Unlike fish, sea turtles breathe air, meaning they have to surface periodically for a breath before heading back underwater.
Honu also hold cultural significance in Hawaiʻi, where they are respected by many as symbols of longevity, wisdom, and protection. For some Native Hawaiian families, honu are considered ʻaumākua, or ancestral guardians.
While green sea turtles are the species visitors are most likely to encounter, Hawaiʻi is also home to the much rarer hawksbill sea turtle, known as honuʻea.

The Best Places to See Sea Turtles on Maui
One of the best things about snorkeling on Maui is that you don't necessarily need to travel far to encounter marine life. Honu can be found along coastlines throughout the island, particularly around reefs where they feed and rest.
Here are some popular places to keep an eye out.
1. Hoʻokipa Beach Park — North Shore

If you're hoping to see sea turtles without even getting in the ocean, Hoʻokipa Beach Park is one of the best places to start!
Located along Maui's North Shore near Pāʻia, Hoʻokipa is well known for its waves, windsurfing, and the green sea turtles that love to come ashore for a nap.
And they don't usually come alone! It's common to see groups of honu resting together on the sand, sometimes with dozens gathered along the eastern end of the beach. From a distance, they can almost look like a collection of large rocks scattered along the shoreline.
Because turtles are such frequent visitors here, you'll often have a great chance of spotting multiple honu without ever stepping foot in the water.
You'll notice signs and designated areas reminding visitors to keep their distance from the resting turtles. Be sure to respect these boundaries, avoid approaching or disturbing the honu, and give them plenty of room to relax.
For visitors exploring Maui's North Shore, Hoʻokipa is definitely worth a stop!
2. Maluaka Beach (Turtle Town) — South Maui
Taken on our Discover Molokini Snorkel
There's a reason this stretch of South Maui's coastline earned the nickname "Turtle Town."
Located near Mākena, Maluaka Beach is known for its beautiful sandy shoreline and nearby rocky reefs, which provide habitat for green sea turtles and a variety of tropical fish.
The reef areas along this coastline are popular snorkeling destinations, with opportunities to spot honu swimming through the water or feeding along the rocks.
Maluaka Beach is accessible from shore, although ocean conditions and visibility can vary from day to day.
Want to explore Turtle Town by boat? This area is also a frequent second snorkeling stop on our Discover Molokini excursion! After snorkeling at Molokini Crater, we often head toward South Maui's coastline for another opportunity to explore the reef and keep an eye out for honu.
3. Kapalua Bay — West Maui
Taken on our Discover Ka’anapali Snorkel
With its crescent-shaped beach and scenic surroundings, Kapalua Bay is a favorite for visitors looking to spend a morning snorkeling in West Maui.
The rocky areas along the edges of the bay provide habitat for reef fish and green sea turtles, making it a popular location for snorkelers hoping to encounter honu.
When conditions are calm, the bay can offer a pleasant snorkeling experience, particularly for visitors who prefer entering the water directly from the beach.
It's also one of the snorkeling locations we may visit on our Discover Kāʻanapali excursion! Departing directly from Kāʻanapali Beach, this tour explores West Maui's coastline, with snorkeling locations selected based on the day's conditions.
4. Black Rock (Puʻu Kekaʻa) — Kāʻanapali

If you're staying along Kāʻanapali Beach, Black Rock is probably already on your radar!
Located at the northern end of Kāʻanapali Beach, Puʻu Kekaʻa, commonly known as Black Rock, is one of West Maui's most recognizable landmarks and a popular spot for snorkeling and cliff jumping.
The rocky underwater environment attracts a variety of tropical fish, and if you're lucky, you might even spot a honu swimming along the reef.
However, because Black Rock is such a popular area for beachgoers, snorkelers, and cliff jumpers, it can get pretty busy. With all that activity in the water, sea turtle sightings aren't always as likely as visitors might hope.
It's still a fun spot to check out, especially if you're staying nearby and want to explore right off the beach. Just be mindful of the deeper water, currents, and cliff-jumping activity when deciding whether conditions are appropriate for snorkeling.
And if seeing honu is high on your Maui bucket list, we'd recommend setting aside some time to explore West Maui's reefs on a dedicated snorkeling excursion, too!
5. Olowalu, Mala Wharf & West Maui's Reefs — Best Explored by Boat
Taken on our Discover West Maui Snorkel
Some of Maui's most exciting turtle encounters happen along the reefs of West Maui, where honu can often be found feeding, resting, or swimming through the coral.
Olowalu is one of the area's well-known snorkeling destinations, home to an extensive reef system with a variety of tropical fish and marine life. Its coral formations provide habitat for green sea turtles, making it a popular place to keep an eye out for honu.
Farther north, Mala Wharf is another favorite. The remains of the old pier have created an underwater environment filled with marine life, including reef fish, turtles, and occasionally other exciting visitors. It's a particularly interesting place to explore because of the structures that now serve as habitat beneath the surface.
Then there's Coral Gardens, a beautiful reef area along the West Maui coastline that's accessible by boat. Its coral formations and marine life make it another great location for snorkeling, with opportunities to encounter honu in their natural environment.
These are just a few of the locations we frequent on our Turtle Reef Snorkel and Discover West Maui excursions!
Our captains select snorkeling destinations based on ocean conditions, so while we can't promise a specific location on every trip, these West Maui reefs are among the places we love sharing with our guests.
And if you're hoping to swim alongside a honu, there's no better way to increase your opportunities than spending some time exploring the reefs where they're known to frequent.
Want to Swim with Honu? Join Us Aboard Trilogy!
While spotting turtles from shore is pretty special, there's something entirely different about watching a honu glide effortlessly through the water right in front of you.

And if one snorkeling location just isn't enough, our Discover West Maui excursion offers an extended adventure with two snorkel stops, giving you even more opportunities to explore Maui's underwater world.

Our captains know West Maui's coastline well and will choose a snorkeling location based on the day's conditions, often visiting areas such as Olowalu, Coral Gardens, Mala Wharf, or other reefs known for their marine life.
Our crew will be there to help you get comfortable with your snorkeling equipment, whether you're a first-time snorkeler or have spent plenty of time exploring beneath the surface.
And, of course, no morning with Trilogy would be complete without our freshly baked cinnamon rolls!

Love the idea of Turtle Reef Snorkel but wish you could explore more than one location? That's where Discover West Maui comes in!
Think of Discover West Maui as an extended version of our Turtle Reef Snorkel, with more time on the water and TWO snorkeling locations instead of one.
We frequent many of the same turtle-friendly reefs along West Maui's coastline, but with an additional stop, you'll have twice as many snorkeling locations to explore and more opportunities to encounter honu.
Each reef has something different to offer, from colorful coral formations and schools of tropical fish to the possibility of spotting turtles, rays, octopuses, and other marine life. With more time aboard, guests can also enjoy the beautiful West Maui coastline, our crew's hospitality, and lunch served during the excursion.
It's a great option for visitors who want to make a full adventure out of their snorkeling experience, especially those who can't get enough time in the ocean.
Of course, honu are wild animals, and sightings can never be guaranteed on either excursion. But visiting reefs where turtles are frequently encountered gives you a great opportunity to see these incredible animals in their natural habitat.
Turtle Reef Snorkel vs. Discover West Maui: Which Should You Choose?
Both excursions offer opportunities to explore Maui's reefs, but the best choice really depends on how you'd like to spend your day.
If you're looking for a shorter outing focused on snorkeling at one reef, Turtle Reef Snorkel is a great fit. It's an easy way to experience Maui's underwater world without dedicating most of your day to an excursion.
If you're hoping for a longer adventure with two snorkeling locations, more time exploring the coastline, and lunch included, Discover West Maui might be more your speed.
Either way, you'll be heading out with a knowledgeable Trilogy crew ready to share their love for Maui's ocean and marine life. Want to compare all of our tours and find the best match for you? Compare all of our tours here.
How to Snorkel Responsibly Around Sea Turtles
As exciting as it is to encounter a honu in the wild, it's important to remember that we're visitors in their home.
Hawaiian green sea turtles are protected under state and federal law, and giving them space helps ensure they can continue feeding, resting, and swimming without disturbance.
A few important things to remember when encountering sea turtles on Maui:
Keep at least 10 feet (3 meters) between yourself and any sea turtle, whether you're in the water or on land. Give them even more space whenever possible.
Never touch, chase, feed, or attempt to ride a sea turtle.
Avoid blocking a turtle's path, especially when it's heading toward the surface for air.
If a turtle approaches you, remain calm and give it room to pass rather than attempting to interact.
Never stand on or touch coral while observing marine life.
It's also worth remembering that turtles resting on the beach aren't stranded. Hawaiian green sea turtles regularly come ashore to bask, so the best thing you can do is admire them from a respectful distance.
At Trilogy, we believe that enjoying Maui's marine life and protecting it should always go hand in hand.
When Is the Best Time to See Sea Turtles on Maui?
Photo taken on our Discover West Maui Snorkel
The good news? Unlike humpback whales, which visit Hawaiʻi seasonally, green sea turtles can be found in Maui's waters throughout the year.
That means you have a chance of encountering honu whether you're visiting in January, July, or anywhere in between.
When it comes to snorkeling, morning conditions are often preferable because Maui's trade winds frequently strengthen later in the day. However, ocean conditions can change quickly, and mornings aren't guaranteed to be calm.
Water clarity, swell, currents, and weather all play a role in determining where it's safe and enjoyable to snorkel.
This is one of the benefits of joining a guided snorkeling excursion. Our captains evaluate the conditions and select appropriate snorkeling locations, allowing guests to focus on enjoying their time on the water.
Ready to Meet Maui's Honu?
Whether you're watching turtles rest on the sand at Hoʻokipa, snorkeling along South Maui's reefs, or exploring West Maui's coastline aboard Trilogy, seeing a honu in its natural habitat is an experience worth adding to your Maui itinerary.
And while there's never a guarantee of what you'll encounter beneath the surface, that's part of the fun of snorkeling in Hawaiʻi. Every trip into the ocean offers something a little different.
If you're ready to see what Maui's underwater world has to offer, join us aboard our Turtle Reef Snorkel or Discover West Maui excursion. We'd love to show you around!
