Which Trilogy Tour Is Right for You? A Guide to Choosing the Best Maui Sailing Experience

Which Trilogy Tour Is Right for You?

If you've started exploring Trilogy's tours, you've probably found yourself asking the same question we hear every day:

"Which tour should I pick?"

The truth is, there isn't one "best" tour—there's only the tour that's best for you.

Some guests dream of spending the day exploring the secluded shores of Lānaʻi. Others have snorkeling Molokini Crater at the top of their Maui bucket list. Maybe you're looking for the quickest snorkel adventure before an afternoon tee time, or perhaps all you want is a relaxing sunset sail with great food, handcrafted cocktails, and incredible views.

Every Trilogy experience is designed a little differently, and that's exactly what makes choosing the right one so much fun.

In this guide, we'll walk you through each of our sail offerings, explain what makes each one unique, and help you decide which experience best matches the kind of day you're hoping to have on the water.

And if you find yourself wanting to do more than one? Don't worry—you wouldn't be the first. Many of our guests discover that one day on the water just isn't enough.

trilogy’s flagship tour (8 Hours)

Discover Lāna’i

If you're looking for the experience that truly does it all, Discover Lānaʻi is hard to beat.

As Trilogy's flagship tour, this full-day 8-hour adventure takes you across the beautiful ʻAuʻau Channel to the island of Lānaʻi, where you'll spend the day exploring places that most Maui visitors never get to experience. Trilogy is the only catamaran company permitted to bring guests ashore on Lānaʻi, giving you the rare opportunity to step onto one of Hawaiʻi's most beautiful marine preserves.

Spend your time snorkeling the crystal-clear waters of Hulopoʻe Bay, relaxing on a secluded beach that often feels like your own private slice of paradise, exploring tide pools, or taking the scenic coastal walk to Puʻu Pehe (Sweetheart Rock), one of Hawaiʻi's most photographed landmarks. When you're ready for lunch, you'll enjoy a freshly prepared island BBQ served beneath the Hale overlooking Manele Harbor before sailing back to Maui with unforgettable views of Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi, Kahoʻolawe, and Maui along the way.

best for:

  • Families, Couples, or Solo Travelers looking for a full-day excursion

  • Anyone dreaming of visiting another Hawaiian island during their vacation

  • Travelers who enjoy a mix of sailing, snorkeling, beach time, sightseeing, and delicious food

  • Travelers looking for unique bucket-list experiences that can’t be done anywhere/with anyone else in the world

consider another experience if:

  • You're prone to seasickness. While many days offer calm conditions, sailing across the ʻAuʻau Channel can occasionally be bumpy depending on the weather. Consider a snorkeling tour other than our Lānaʻi options if youʻre prone to sea sickness.

  • You're looking for a shorter excursion that leaves more time for other activities.

  • You'd rather spend the majority of the trip snorkeling rather than exploring on land. In that case, Lānaʻi Adventure Snorkel may be a better fit.

For the Avid Snorkeler (5.5 Hours)

LĀna‘i ADventure Snorkel

If you’re perfect day on the water means spending as much time snorkeling as possible, Lānaʻi Adventure Snorkel is the tour for you.

Like Discover Lānaʻi, you'll enjoy a breathtaking sail across the ʻAuʻau Channel with panoramic views of Maui, Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi, and Kahoʻolawe. That's where the similarities end. Instead of heading ashore, this adventure focuses on reaching remote snorkel sites along the Lānaʻi coastline that simply can't be accessed from land. These secluded locations are chosen for their incredible underwater scenery and are only reachable by boat, making for a truly adventurous snorkeling experience.

Because the day is centered around snorkeling rather than exploring on land, you'll spend more time in the water discovering vibrant reefs and marine life in some of the most secluded areas around Lānaʻi.

best for:

  • Confident snorkelers looking for an adventure

  • Guests who want to explore another Hawaiian Islands coastline

  • Returning Maui visitors looking for something beyond the typical snorkel tour

  • Travelers who love exploring places few people ever get to see

consider another experience if:

  • You'd like time to relax on the beach or explore Lānaʻi. Discover Lānaʻi includes both.

  • You're new to snorkeling or feel less confident in the water. Discover Molokini or Discover Kā‘anapali may be a more comfortable introduction.

  • You're hoping for a shorter excursion. Turtle Reef Snorkel offers a quicker way to experience Maui's incredible reefs while leaving plenty of time for the rest of your day.

snorkel inside a volcanic crater (5 hours)

Discover Molokini

If snorkeling inside a volcano is on your bucket list, this one is for you.

Molokini is one of Hawaiʻi's most iconic natural landmarks—and for good reason. This crescent-shaped, partially submerged volcanic crater rises from the ocean just a few miles off Maui's southern coast, creating one of the world's most remarkable snorkeling destinations.

Sheltered from open ocean swell, its crystal-clear water often provides visibility exceeding 100 feet, allowing you to take in vibrant reef fish and dramatic underwater volcanic walls below.

After snorkeling Molokini, your Captain will typically head to a second snorkel location along South Maui, where you'll often have the opportunity to snorkel alongside Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) or the dramatic backside of Molokini if conditions allow.

Want to learn how Molokini was formed and why its unique shape creates such incredible snorkeling conditions? Read our guide to the fascinating history and geology of Molokini Crater.

best for:

  • First-time visitors who want to experience one of Maui's most iconic snorkel destinations

  • Guests with Molokini on their bucket list

  • Beginner and experienced snorkelers alike

  • Guests who want to try SNUBA diving

consider another experience if:

  • You're staying on West Maui and would rather avoid the drive to Maʻalaea Harbor. Discover Kā‘anapali offers a convenient beach departure with access to incredible West Maui snorkeling.

  • You want to explore the reefs closer to Maui’s shoreline.

  • You only have a few hours available. Turtle Reef Snorkel offers a shorter snorkeling adventure while leaving more time to enjoy the rest of your day.

kaanapali snorkel mood board

Discover K‘anapali

Are you staying at a resort on Kā‘anapali Beach? This is the tour for you.

Discover Kā‘anapali is Trilogy's only snorkeling tour that departs directly from the sands of Kā‘anapali Beach. Instead of driving to a harbor, you'll simply check in on the beach, walk through the surf, hop aboard our catamaran, and set sail. It's a uniquely Maui way to begin your day on the water.

From there, your Captain will choose the snorkel location offering the best conditions that day. Depending on the weather and ocean conditions, you may explore iconic spots like Honolua Bay, Olowalu (Maui's "Mother Reef"), Kapalua Bay or another spectacular reef along the West Maui coastline.

No matter where you go, you'll enjoy beautiful coastal scenery, personalized service, and some of Maui's healthiest coral reef ecosystems.

best for:

  • Guests staying at Kā‘anapali Beach resorts.

  • Travelers who want to spend less time driving and more time on the water.

  • Families, couples, and first-time snorkelers.

  • Anyone who wants the fun, uniquely Maui experience of boarding a catamaran right from the beach.

consider another experience if:

  • You'd rather board from a harbor. Beach loading requires walking through shallow surf and climbing the boat's stairs, so guests should be comfortable with that process. If you have mobility concerns or very young children, one of our Discover West Maui Maʻalaea Harbor departures may be a better fit.

  • You’re staying in Kā‘anapali and want to explore another area of Maui

the perfect half-day adventure (3.5 hours)

Turtle Reef Snorkel

If snorkeling with Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) is at the top of your Maui wish list, Turtle Reef Snorkel was designed with you in mind.

Unlike tours that follow the same route every day, Turtle Reef Snorkel gives our Captains the flexibility to choose the reef with the best ocean conditions and the greatest potential for recent honu sightings.

At just 3.5 hours, it's also Trilogy's shortest snorkeling excursion—perfect for guests who want an unforgettable morning on the water without committing an entire day. Whether you have afternoon plans, young kids who aren't ready for a longer excursion, or simply prefer a shorter adventure, Turtle Reef Snorkel delivers the signature Trilogy experience in a more compact itinerary.

Better yet, Turtle Reef Snorkel offers both morning and afternoon departures, so whether you're an early riser ready to hit the water or you'd rather enjoy a slow morning before setting sail, there's an option that fits your schedule. You'll still enjoy the personalized service Trilogy is known for, premium snorkel gear, and a freshly prepared lunch that's unique to this tour before heading back to shore.

best for:

  • Guests hoping to snorkel with Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu).

  • Travelers looking for a shorter snorkeling adventure.

  • Guests who want the flexibility of choosing either a morning or afternoon departure.

  • Families with younger children or visitors who have other plans later in the day.

consider another experience if:

  • You love the idea of Turtle Reef Snorkel but wish you had more time on the water. Discover West Maui Snorkel builds on the same Captain's-choice approach with a longer itinerary, two Honu-heavy snorkel locations, and a freshly prepared Huli Huli chicken lunch plate.

trilogy’s best kept secret (5 hours)

Discover west maui

If you ask our Captains or Crew which public snorkel tour they recommend most often, don't be surprised if they say Discover West Maui Snorkel.

While tours like Molokini and Lānaʻi often steal the spotlight, this hidden gem quietly delivers some of the best snorkeling on Maui. Rather than following a fixed itinerary, your Captain selects two snorkel locations based on where the best snorkeling conditions are that day. That means every trip is a little different—and every itinerary is designed to give you the best experience possible.

The marine life is what truly sets Discover West Maui apart. Many of the reefs visited on this tour are home to honu cleaning stations—areas where Hawaiian green sea turtles regularly return to have algae and parasites cleaned from their shells by reef fish. While wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, these reefs are among the best places on Maui to encounter honu in their natural habitat. Keep your eyes peeled and you may also spot harmless whitetip reef sharks resting beneath ledges, octopus expertly camouflaged among the reef (if you have a sharp eye!), schools of vibrant tropical fish, and, if you're especially lucky, a graceful spotted eagle ray gliding effortlessly through the blue.

best for:

  • Guests who love the idea of Turtle Reef Snorkel but want a longer experience with two snorkel stops.

  • Travelers hoping to see a wide variety of Hawaiian marine life.

  • Families, couples, and solo travelers who want the Captain to choose the day's best snorkeling conditions.

  • Returning guests who want to try something new

Sunset Sails

Sometimes the best plans involve doing absolutely nothing at all.

If your ideal Maui evening is watching the sunset with a handcrafted cocktail in one hand and delicious pupus in the other, Trilogy's Sunset Sail is the perfect way to slow down and soak it all in. As the trade winds fill the sails and the sun begins to dip below the horizon, you'll enjoy panoramic views of Maui's coastline from the best seat in the house.

Available from both Kā‘anapali Beach and Maʻalaea Harbor, this relaxing sail features a generous selection of locally inspired appetizers, handcrafted cocktails, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages—all served by Trilogy's friendly crew. Keep an eye on the water, too. Hawaiian spinner dolphins, sea turtles, and, during whale season (December through April), humpback whales are occasionally spotted along the way.

best for:

  • Guests looking for a relaxing evening on the water.

  • Families, couples, and groups of friends.

  • Travelers who want a relaxed yet luxurious sunset experience with pupus and cocktails.

  • Anyone wanting to experience Maui's coastline under sail.

consider another experience if:

  • You're looking for a longer sail that includes a freshly prepared four-course dinner. Captain's Sunset Dinner Sail offers an extended evening on the water with a full dining experience.

  • You want a few minutes of sailing after the sun has gone down and the stars start to come out. Consider our Captain’s Sunset Dinner Sail.

  • You're looking for a more active adventure. One of Trilogy's snorkeling tours may be a better fit.

Looking for an Earlier Evening Sail?

If you're staying on West Maui or have dinner plans later in the evening, the Lahaina Golden Hour Sail is a wonderful alternative. Think of it as an earlier version of our Sunset Sail—departing from Lahaina Harbor so you can enjoy the beautiful golden hour light from the water before heading ashore. With delicious pupus, refreshing drinks, and stunning coastal views, it's the perfect pre-dinner activity for anyone looking to ease into the evening without staying out through sunset.

Designed exclusively for guests ages 18 and older, the Captain's Sunset Dinner Sail offers a quieter, more intimate atmosphere than our Sunset Sail, making it perfect for couples, friends, or anyone looking to enjoy an elevated evening on the water.

Maui’s most magical winter experience

available seasonally from december through april

whale watches

If you're visiting Maui during humpback whale season, this is an experience you won't want to miss.

Every winter, thousands of North Pacific humpback whales migrate to the warm, protected waters surrounding Maui to breed, give birth, and nurse their calves. Trilogy's Whale Watch tours offer a front-row seat to one of nature's most incredible migrations, with opportunities to witness behaviors like breaching, tail slapping, spyhopping, and playful interactions between mothers and calves—all from a safe, respectful distance.

One of the things guests love most about our whale watches is the flexibility. During whale season, Trilogy offers departures from Maʻalaea Harbor, Kā‘anapali Beach, and Lahaina Harbor, with morning, midday, and sunset whale watches available, so you can easily choose the time and location that works best for your vacation.

Our knowledgeable Crew shares fascinating facts about humpback whales, their annual migration, and the importance of protecting these incredible marine mammals. Hydrophones are also lowered into the water whenever possible, allowing you to listen to the haunting songs of the whales beneath the surface—an experience many guests say they never forget.

best for:

  • Guests visiting Maui between December and April.

  • Families with children, couples, and wildlife enthusiasts.

  • Travelers looking for flexible departure locations and times throughout the day.

  • Anyone who loves marine life, photography, or simply being out on the ocean.

consider another experience if:

  • You're visiting outside of whale season. One of Trilogy's snorkeling or sunset sailing experiences lets you enjoy Maui's beautiful coastline year-round.

  • You're hoping to snorkel or swim. Whale Watch tours are dedicated entirely to observing humpback whales and do not include time in the water.

Throughout every whale watch, Trilogy follows NOAA's responsible whale viewing guidelines, ensuring these remarkable animals can be observed safely and respectfully while they go about their natural behaviors.

want the catamaran all to yourself?

If you're celebrating with family, planning a corporate event, or simply value privacy above all else, a Trilogy Private Charter may be the perfect fit.

Private charters allow you to customize your day on the water, whether you're dreaming of snorkeling, sailing, whale watching (seasonally), celebrating a special occasion, or simply relaxing with the people who matter most. You'll enjoy the same exceptional Crew, food, and hospitality Trilogy is known for—with an itinerary built around your group.

Still Not Sure Which Trilogy Tour Is Right for You?
