Is SNUBA Diving Right for Me? Your Guide to SNUBA on Maui

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to breathe underwater? Not just float along the surface with a snorkel, but actually dive beneath it and explore Maui's reefs from a whole new perspective?

That's exactly what SNUBA allows you to do!

Combining elements of snorkeling and SCUBA diving, SNUBA gives you the opportunity to explore beneath the ocean's surface without the heavy equipment or certification required for traditional SCUBA diving. It's a great option for anyone looking to take their underwater adventure a little further while visiting Maui.

But how exactly does SNUBA work, and is it right for you? We're answering some of the most common questions about SNUBA diving on Maui, including what to expect, who can participate, and how to add this experience to your next Trilogy snorkeling excursion.

What Is SNUBA Diving?

SNUBA, short for Surface Nexus Underwater Breathing Apparatus, is an underwater activity that combines the accessibility of snorkeling with the experience of breathing underwater like a SCUBA diver.

Unlike traditional SCUBA diving, where you carry an air tank on your back, SNUBA uses a specially designed raft that floats on the ocean's surface. Your air supply remains on this raft, connected to you through a long hose and a lightweight harness.

You'll breathe through a regulator (a mouthpiece similar to those used in SCUBA diving), allowing you to explore underwater without needing to return to the surface for every breath.

The best part? No previous diving experience or SCUBA certification is required! A trained SNUBA guide will walk you through the equipment, explain important safety procedures, and accompany you throughout your underwater experience.

SNUBA vs. Snorkeling vs. SCUBA Diving: What's the Difference?

If you've snorkeled before, you already know how incredible Maui's underwater world can be. But each of these activities offers a slightly different way to experience it.

Snorkeling: You'll float at the ocean's surface, breathing through a snorkel while observing marine life below. It's a great way to explore Maui's reefs without specialized training.

SNUBA: You'll have the freedom to descend beneath the surface while breathing through a regulator connected to an air supply floating above. Unlike snorkeling, you don't need to hold your breath to dive down, and unlike SCUBA, you don't need to carry a tank or obtain a diving certification.

SCUBA Diving: You'll carry your own underwater air supply, allowing you to explore greater depths. Traditional recreational SCUBA diving typically requires additional training and certification, although supervised introductory experiences are also available. *We do not offer SCUBA Diving on any of our tours.*

For visitors who are curious about SCUBA diving but aren't ready to commit to certification, SNUBA offers a fun introduction to breathing underwater.

What Can You Expect During a SNUBA Experience?

Before entering the water, your SNUBA guide will introduce you to the equipment and explain how everything works. You'll learn how to breathe through the regulator, equalize the pressure in your ears, communicate underwater, and move comfortably through the water.

Once you're ready, you'll enter the ocean with your guide and begin exploring at a depth that feels comfortable for you.

There's no need to rush straight to the bottom! Some participants prefer to remain just a few feet below the surface, while others feel comfortable exploring deeper.

As you move through the water, you may encounter colorful tropical fish, coral formations, and perhaps even one of Maui's beloved Hawaiian green sea turtles, or honu. Every underwater experience is different, and marine life sightings are never guaranteed.

One of the most memorable parts of SNUBA is simply being able to slow down and observe the underwater world without constantly returning to the surface for air.

SNUBA Diving FAQs: Everything You Need to Know

Do I Need Previous Snorkeling or Diving Experience?

No! One of the biggest advantages of SNUBA is that you don't need a SCUBA certification or previous diving experience to participate. However, being comfortable in the ocean is important. Breathing through a regulator can feel unfamiliar at first, particularly if you've never snorkeled before.

Your guide will help you get acquainted with the equipment and determine whether you're comfortable participating. You should have basic swimming ability and be comfortable in the water.

What Is the Minimum Age for SNUBA?

Guests must be at least 8 years old to participate in SNUBA with Trilogy Excursions.

This makes SNUBA a fun option for families with older children who are comfortable in the ocean and interested in exploring below the surface. All participants must meet the activity's safety and medical requirements, regardless of age.

How Deep Can You Go While SNUBA Diving?

SNUBA systems can allow participants to explore depths of up to 20 feet, although the maximum permitted depth depends on the operator, equipment, and individual experience.

With Trilogy, your SNUBA guide will establish the appropriate depth for your experience.

How Long Does a SNUBA Dive Last?

SNUBA dives typically last around 20–25 minutes, although the exact duration varies depending on factors such as individual air consumption, comfort, and ocean conditions.

Your guide will monitor the experience and help ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time underwater.

What Equipment Do I Wear?

SNUBA equipment is relatively simple. You'll wear a mask, fins, a lightweight harness, and a regulator connected to the air supply at the surface. Depending on the equipment and conditions, a weight belt may also be used.

Unlike SCUBA diving, you won't need to carry a heavy air tank on your back.

Can I Return to the Surface During My SNUBA Dive?

Yes! You aren't required to remain underwater for the entire experience.

If you need a break or feel uncomfortable, communicate with your guide and follow their instructions for safely returning to the surface. Because SNUBA involves breathing compressed air underwater, it's important to breathe continuously, never hold your breath while ascending, and follow your guide's instructions at all times.

Are There Medical Requirements for SNUBA?

Yes. Although SNUBA doesn't require a diving certification, participants must meet certain medical and safety requirements.

All guests are required to complete a medical questionnaire and liability release before participating. Certain conditions, including respiratory or heart conditions, ear or sinus problems, and other medical concerns, may require physician clearance or prevent participation. SNUBA is not permitted during pregnancy.

If you have questions about a medical condition that could affect your ability to participate, we recommend speaking with your healthcare provider and contacting our reservations team before booking your SNUBA experience.

Can I Fly or Visit Haleakalā After SNUBA Diving?

Because SNUBA involves breathing compressed air underwater, altitude changes after diving require special consideration.

SNUBA International's participant release specifies a minimum four-hour waiting period before flying. If you're planning to take a helicopter tour, visit the summit of Haleakalā, or participate in another high-altitude activity, be sure to discuss your plans with your SNUBA guide beforehand.

Is SNUBA Safe for Beginners?

SNUBA is designed to introduce eligible beginners to underwater breathing under the supervision of a professionally trained guide. Before your dive, you'll receive instructions on equipment use, breathing techniques, underwater communication, and safety procedures.

Like any underwater diving activity, SNUBA carries risks and requires participants to follow safety guidelines. Your comfort level, medical eligibility, and ocean conditions are all important considerations. If you're feeling unsure, don't hesitate to ask questions before entering the water!
