BlueʻAina Impact: How Reef Cleanups Protect Maui’s Future
Maui’s reefs are more than breathtaking underwater landscapes—they are the foundation of life in our islands. At Trilogy Excursions, we believe that protecting these ecosystems is not just a responsibility, but a privilege. That’s why we created Blue ʻAina, a community-driven reef cleanup program dedicated to preserving the health of our ocean for generations to come.
What is blue ‘aina?
Blue ʻAina is Trilogy’s monthly reef cleanup initiative, launched in 2010 to unite local businesses, nonprofits, and volunteers in a shared mission: to remove marine debris and restore balance to Maui’s coastal waters. Each event combines hands-on action with education, empowering participants to understand the impact of pollution and the importance of sustainable practices.
WHy reef cleanups matter
Coral reefs are vital to Hawaiʻi’s marine life, coastal protection, and cultural heritage. Yet, they face growing threats from plastic pollution, abandoned fishing gear, and climate change. Every piece of debris removed during a Blue ʻAina cleanup helps prevent harm to native species like honu (green sea turtles) and ʻopihi, while supporting the resilience of our reefs against bleaching and erosion.
Community and conservation
Blue ʻAina is more than a cleanup—it’s a movement. By partnering with local organizations and hosting educational talks onboard our sailing vessels, Trilogy fosters a deeper connection between people and the ocean. Volunteers leave not only with cleaner reefs but with knowledge that inspires lasting change in their daily lives.
The Impact So Far
Since its inception, Blue ʻAina has removed thousands of pounds of debris from Maui’s reefs and raised funds for local nonprofits focused on ocean conservation. These efforts ripple outward, protecting fisheries, sustaining tourism, and preserving the cultural traditions tied to our waters.
Our most recent event
In our most recent Blue ʻAina event, Trilogy partnered with Mama’s Fish House—marking their fourth time sponsoring a cleanup— and welcomed members of the Boys & Girls Club of Maui aboard. Together, we combined reef stewardship with youth education, creating an unforgettable day of learning and action. These young ocean advocates not only helped remove debris from Maui’s reefs but also gained hands-on experience in marine conservation, empowering the next generation to protect Hawaiʻi’s natural resources.
“Blue ‘Aina is something we look forward to every year. We love supporting family business, our oceans and our community. We can’t wait to sponder again next year. Riley and his crew always bring the good vibes!”
Join us in protecting Maui’s Future
Every Blue ʻAina event is an opportunity to give back to the ocean that gives us so much. Whether you’re a visitor or a kamaʻāina, your participation makes a difference. Together, we can ensure that Maui’s reefs remain vibrant for future generations.
