2015 Blue'Aina Beach Clean-up sponsored by The Hawaiian Paddle Sports
2014 was an incredible year for the Blue’aina program. The growing support from volunteers, corporate and food sponsors has been overwhelming! In 2014 Trilogy was able to have 17 Blue’Aina reef cleanups and raised over $10,000 for local non-profits!
The beginning of 2015 brought a small storm that hit West Maui and the Lahaina harbor. Wreckage from boats, trash and other debris was strewn all over the Harbor. We decided that the best use of this Blue’aina would be to clean Lahaina beaches and Harbor. With volunteers from The Hawaiian Paddle Sports, the Hawaiian Canoe club and the Hawaii Wildlife fund, we set out with gloves and trash bags to see how much trash we could recover.
The volunteers decided to divide and conquer. The first group went to the beach on Front St. to clean up wreckage from the catamaran that broke off its mooring in the storm. The other went into the harbor to take care of all the debris that was swept into the harbor from the wind and waves. The volunteers worked hard and gathered an astonishing amount of garbage. Two massive piles of debris were gathered onto land and countless bags of trash filled from random debris from all over. All in all the volunteers gathered hundreds of pounds of trash, debris and random boat parts.
After spending the morning gathering trash and debris, The Hawaiian Paddle Sports organization presented $500 checks to both the Hawaiian Canoe club and the Hawaii Wildlife fund!
Mahalo to our volunteers who give so much to the Blue’Aina cause! Mahalo to The Hawaiian Paddle Sports, the Hawaiian Canoe club and the Hawaii Wildlife fund! We hope to see you all again for our next Blue’Aina!
